Last, they lit the candles, red and green. Sam lightly touched the taper to each one as it rested, seemingly so precariously, on the tree’s branches. When he finished, he stepped back, put his arm around Rose, and looked at his handiwork. Their first Yule tree glowed with mellow benevolence.
“I don’t much hold with trees indoors, but this looks … well, it looks fine,” he said.
“I know it wasn’t your family’s habit on Yule,” Rose said.
“It is now.” Sam’s voice was a little husky. “This is still a Baggins home, whether or no there’s a Baggins living here.”
